reading glass display caseYou’ve seen them. Those little 5 foot stands that twirl and give you a few choices of reading glasses. They usually have a small mirror so that you can try them on and see how they look. Many have a chart so that once you determine what strength you need, you can then go directly to the style you like in that strength.

But it seems you have to visit a lot of little shops and drugstores, etc. to have many choices. With all the folks, at the very least, needing reading glasses, wouldn’t it be great to have a little shop or large kiosk areas that offer a wonderful variety of sizes, styles and strengths!!!

They used to have places like that for sunglasses. Well, maybe it’s time for reading glasses as well. I always feel like they are an afterthought, an opportunity for the store owner to make a few bucks. Similar to placing candy and magazines next to the check-out counter. It would be great if someone actually took this idea as a real business concept. There are plenty of online shops with lots of choices, but it’s not nearly as much fun as trying them on. Since they’re usually priced much more reasonably than prescription glasses, having the opportunity to try them on would probably encourage someone to buy more than one pair!

I’m not advocating ignoring having your eyes checked by a licensed optometrist. But I know a huge number of people that just need a great pair of reading glasses. How do I know? Because they often borrow mine to read the menu!

Of course, if you’ve not noticed, I am a a gray-haired, eyeglass wearing woman. So, you’ll find a number of these businesses things that I think we need or what I would like! But there will plenty of other ideas as I add to my 101 Business Ideas category.

Superfocus eyeglasses

PS While doing a little research I found this AMAZING concept… of course, they’re not cheap, but I’d give ‘em a try if I had the $$$s. Styling is also limited due to the technology used in the lens. VERY interesting. These glasses were used by astronauts!

I have not yet figured out why – of all the available hair products – no one is really considering the desires of the baby boomers… actually women 50 and over. Amazingly, many of them do NOT want to cover the gray. They want fashionable, modern styling that accents their gray. Some women want sassy and feisty styling… others more classy and sophisticated. A few even prefer a very natural look.

Beautiful gray haired womanIs anyone adding dark lighting to accent the face to create a more pleasing ‘gray.’ Do I have to totally cover my gray? Are there other choices? Could these choices be done at home? Do I have to spend upwards of $50 every month to get a nice effect?

Are there products out there to help control the gray hair? Every woman with gray hair knows that it does not behave in the predictable manner that her hair did before it turned gray. I know there are stylists out there who understand gray hair. Where are the articles sharing that information?

While I’m on hair and styling, who trains hair stylists? When you’ve shared your life with the same head of hair for 50+ years, why is it that a stylist won’t listen to your suggestions for how you’d like your  hair cut, styled, etc? It’s been years since I’ve had a stylist actually look at my hair from my level rather than standing above me. (Oh, I’ll be surprised if I don’t irritate someone with that comment!)

Anyway, I believe that there are many products, styles, and services needed for the graying population. Modern women are not ashamed of their gray hair. They’re definitely not dowdy matrons. They rock climb and meditate, build business empires and mentor young people. They’re entrepreneurs and caretakers. Their lifestyles remain full and satisfying.

So… there you go. Let’s start seeing more for the “gray hairs.” While you’re at it, let’s see more ‘real gray’ in advertising. The market is there. We don’t want to be 20 somethings – or even 40 somethings. We want to be fashionable 50 plus somethings. Let’s see some real entrepreneurs break some new ground!

Tan man-style hat on a blond with sunglassesSeveral years ago I wanted to open a hat shoppe. In my teens, I loved visiting hat departments, but they seemed to always be located right next to the escalator in a huge department store. Being a bit shy at trying on hats where others could see me, I consequently didn’t try very many. Over the years (decades), I’ve found myself drawn to hats over and over. One day I did some thinkin’ on what would make a GREAT hat shoppe. Here’s my basic plan:

NAME:

HAT~titudes, “hats to accent your attitude” ~ classy or sassy, feisty or fun, sophisticated or artsy!

Now I believe that name has possibly been used. But at the time, it set the stage for what I wanted to accomplish.

KEY ELEMENTS:

  • Friendly atmosphere that offers encouragement and knowledgeable support.
  • Privacy so that you can try different hats without feeling like you’re in a showroom window.
  • Hats that come in sizes – not just one-size-fits-all… since they really don’t “fit all”.
  • Helping women understand that there’s a hat to fit every woman’s physical build: round, thin, short, tall,  etc.
  • Offering an ‘experience’ that combines quality product, an inviting setting, and an easy, comfortable atmosphere
  • Everything in the shop would be hat-themed, from the music to the accessories. Listening to Joe Cocker sing, “You can leave your hat on” and others.
  • Included would be a separate area where a woman dealing with hair loss due to cancer or any other reason, could privately try on hats and scarves in an area that offers comfortable seating, a vanity mirror, and large enough to enjoy the experience with a friend.

Every great success in the history of man has come from the development and application of new ideas. That doesn’t mean you have to create all your ideas yourself. But you do have to make them your own. You have to develop them yourself, so that you can apply them in ways that nobody else has thought of, and that can work for you.

Just in time for my ‘ideas’ postings, I came across this very exciting blog.  Read more of this article here.

Ideas - Ideas - and more - IDEAS!

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here.. TOO long in fact. But lots of changes occur throughout a year. It won’t be long before I have another birthday coming up – yep 67!!!

So I sometimes wonder why anyone would be listening to me. hmmmm

I’m an idea person. I’ve realized I will NEVER get to do all the ideas that roll around in  my busy brain. So this year I’m going to share those ideas.

Some will be silly-sounding. Others will definitely maybe send a ‘spark’ to some entrepreneurial spirit out there. If so, let me know how it goes.

Also, many of the ideas, I can share a basic business plan, if you’re interested, for a small consulting fee.

No matter what, have fun with my ideas. I always do.
